Urinary catherization

Foley catheter

A Foley catheter is a sterile tube that is inserted into the bladder to drain urine. At the tip of the catheter is a small balloon that holds the catheter in place in the bladder.

How to place

The genital area should first be cleaned to prevent infection. The catheter is then inserted into the urethra and the balloon is filled to hold the catheter in place. Then urine begins to flow into the tube. In addition, the end of the catheter must be attached to a urine bag to collect the urine there.

The sizing of Foley catheter is shown by FR. Actually; every French is equivalent to 0.33mm.

Normally, 5, 6, 8 and 10FR are used for pediatrics.
